Scientific Mission

Exploring new application areas of mechanics at the micro and nano scales, in a highly multidisciplinary environment, is the scientific mission of the CNMM.

Scientific Motivation

Even in an age dominated by exponential progress in information technology and major breakthroughs in genomics and proteomics, still mechanics occupies an essential place in basic science and applied technology.

As the electronic properties of materials set increasingly severe limits on the downsizing of integrated circuits, mechanics at the nano and micro scale has been experiencing something of a renaissance.

Also, at these small scales, mechanical solutions are proving to be a viable alternative to chemical ones, for example in the detection and manipulation of biological substances.

At the juncture between classical and quantum mechanics, between physics and biology, and between basic science and innovation, mechanics has a bright future which the CNMM will help to develop.
