Jing ZHU  Professor

Scientific Profile

Prof. Zhu is one of the pioneers in analytical electron microscopy field in China. She has been engaging in developing electron microscopy for characterization of crystal structure, deformation structure and electronic structure and doing applied fundamental research in metals, alloys, functional ceramics, nano- materials. From the late 1960s to late 1980s, Prof. Zhu and her colleagues investigated alloying principle and the toughening method in high-strength steel, based on their research, a rational heat treatment system and alloying way which are adopted in the engineering applications were suggested.
The effect of coherent electron wave on a nano diffraction from an individual planar fault was found and defined for the first time in the world by her observation using the cold field emission gun scanning transmission electron microscope and analysis with diffraction theory in 1982. The original publications have been widely cited.
Since 1990th she has developing the characterization methods in nano-scale. For example, the measurement of ordered degree in grain boundary by nano-diffraction, the investigation of stress-induced phase transformation in alloys by electron microscopy and mechanical testing, electron diffraction from a helical structure and size effect of one dimensional material on its physical properties and structure stability, etc.
Prof. Zhu received 9 awards, including the National Nature Science Prize; the National Science and Technology Progress Prize; the Science and Technology Progress Prizes by Metallurgical Industry Ministry, Chinese Academy of Sciences and National Education Committee, respectively. She has published over 180 articles in academic journals, such as Science, ANGEWANDTE CHEMIE-INTERNATIONAL EDITION, Adv. Mater.,Applied Phys. Lett., and ; Physical Review B,  and 4 monographs.
